OP Contributing Member (25+ posts) Joined: Aug 2008 Posts: 30 | My father just had surgery to remove a large tumor on the base of his tongue. It was about 10 days ago. He was given a tracheostomy. He can talk somewhat but cannot swallow. I am really worried because he can cough plegm up but cannot seem to spit it out. I'm worried that he may have to keep the trache in forever and that is really scary to me. Did anyone have a trache and have similar problems? Does it get any better? Rett
