I work for a Hospital in the Nuclear Medicine Dept. and we see alot of people who have had their thyroids removed. We sometimes treat them with Radioactive Iodine following their surgery and follow-up with a total body scan (using the iodine) to search for mets. I wouldn't be surprised if this is in your mothers future. The good news is, based on what I see and have read, the prognosis (depending on the type of cancer) is very good follwing the surgery and Tx.
