Given the circumstances, I do not believe a judge would force your boyfriend to dind life insurance at an exhorbitant cost. That said, with all you have to worry about right now, do not add that to the mix.
I know someone that had terminal pancreatic cancer and they bought a policy that said they could not die in the first two years but even death from the cancer would be covered. I will try to find their daughter and get the name of the company.
Often, group life insurance is portable but you have to excercise that option with 60 days of termination. You may be able to check with the employer and petition the group or appeal to the insurance company to grant an exception because you did not know the specifics.
Otherwise, your boyfriend will have to get a job and enroll in a group lfe insurance policy. They usually have a minimum level the group is covered for and then additional amounts that reqire answering medical questions. Mine was $25,000 even though the insurance company never allowed me to port it. I just got tired of fighting them.
