To echo what Mark said, there should be social services available. Most hospitals have a social worker on staff that should be able to point your friend in the right direction. Additionally, the eligibility clock for SSDI started the day he was unable to work. Again, the hospital should be able to help. They want to get paid by someone so I'm sure they will help her find some sources.
