It's all done! They changed the surgery date to December 26th, so I had to change my travel arrangements last minute which added stress. They did a CT an hour before the scheduled surgery and found that dad's titanium plate had fractured. The part that was sticking through the right side of his chin was attached to the left side of his jaw, so at the last minute they changed their approach. Originally, it was going to be a cut on the same side as his previous mandible surgeries, when they thought they'd go in from the right and remove it. Now, they were cutting on the left, and told dad the nerve that operates his lip would probably be damaged and his drooling was going to get worse, which, of course, stressed him out, but he said go ahead with the surgery. Turns out, they could feel the screws through his skin, so they stabbed him over each one, removed the screws and pulled the plate out through his existing chin wound. He's got about 10 stitches and they didn't have to cut that nerve.


Dad was diagnosed 2/28/18 w Stage 4, N0 Verrucous carcinoma (VC) an uncommon variant of SSC
Mandibulectomy and free-flap reconstruction 5/30/18
Diagnosis changed to SSC.
Began treatment of 30 rads and 5 Cisplatin Cycles on 7/18/18
Decided not to do any more Cisplatin after the first one.
Finished treatment on 8/31/18.
