I had a few sore areas that came and went over months and I would deal with them quickly and they would go away. It's when they don't that you have to worry - though the tissue in his mouth is damaged so healing tends to take longer. From what I know of scans - in my experience - it's usually less than 24 hours for the results to be finalized. I wouldn't wait a week. Call earlier and see if you can get in on a cancellation I have had results in as little as 3 hours.
they shouldn't make you wait... you've been through enough. Also remember sometimes the scans will show hot areas, this may be related to healing and inflammation or infection, so not all that glows is cancer, though a good radiologist and ENT can pretty much figure out what is worrisome.
