Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 61 | I generally get a PAP from my family physician once a year and am wondering if I should proactively be doing anything different (e.g., going to a GYN or getting screened more than once a year). Does being positive for HPV and developing oral cancer put us at a greater risk of developing cervical cancer? If so, should we have different standards for our physical exams?
SCC, right tonsil, T1N0MO, G3, HPV-33 positive, 7 wks IMRT 2/21/07-4/13/07, 48 year old female when diagnosed, non-smoker, weekend wine drinker, tumor and both tonsils removed. Ethyol for 3 weeks; no peg; only minimal longterm side effects

Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 8,311 | So far, to the best of my knowledge, there has been no link established between HPV cervically and orally within the same body. However much is not known about HPV.

Have you ever had an irregular PAP? As David said, there's not been a connection made between cervical cancer and oral cancer, but it might be worth a question to your oncologist.

Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 61 | Thanks for the replys. I haven't had an irregular PAP. I think I was on a one year schedule due to the HPV (which no one ever mentioned to me). I'll ask my oncologist at my next visit. I know the majority of people with HPV do not develop cervical cancer and the majority of people with HPV do not develop oral cancer, but I couldn't help wondering if developing one made you more at risk to develop the other.

Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.
