And if he still has fluid in the lungs, why is he going to rehab? What do they expect to rehabilitate? Are you still dealing with this local hospital? Is it time to get to Boston where he might get some better treatment or is he too weak to go? If that is the case, records could be sent for a second opinion. Pneumonia in his weakened condition could be very serious.
I have not had good experience with 5 star rehab facilities with a patient that is not capable/willing to take care of himself or for that matter somone who was. Meds not given or not given at proper time, illness not treated, falling down, left in wheelchair by nurses station in pain for hours, over drugged etc. etc. I could go on for hours. My father dropped 20+ lbs in 8 days and noone at rehab noticed because they didn't weigh him. So keep a diligent eye on what he is being fed and his meds and make certain dr sees him if having problems.
Take care, Eileen

The reason he is in rehab is to work on his strength and nutrition, and the fluid in his lungs they now believe is from his aspirating all the secrtions, they will work with a pulminary dr for the lungs, they have him on a directics which is difficult because they don't want to dry him out to much from all his nutrients. There was one dr we met today at rehab that said there has been a recent study of the fentynal patch causing decreased respiratory problems he may try a drug that is meant just for nerve pain, since that is where all the pain is right now and they can't see any cancer but think it may be nerve pain from the radiation, I'm really beginning to think the hyperbaric was way to much for him. I'll keep you posted Take Care B
BOT stage IV SCC moderately diff, invasive. radiation 2 chemos. DX 06/06. Ended radiation 8/11/06. Bleed out from tonsil area from radiation necrosis 10/27/06.
