Since my brain is still a bit tired, the following is taken directly from the dismissal summary:
patient underwent reection of the right posterior mandible with a right buccal transpositional flap. Surgigal pathology was identified to be SCC that did not invade the osseous structures of the periosteum.
So it was all good news. It wasn't necessary to remove any nodes. It even turns out that I shaved my thigh for nothing as they didn't need to borrow the skin after all.
I definately feel better than I expected I would. Today is the worst day so far, according to the Doc, today is the day that the swelling should be peaking. My face is huge and hard. I am very numb on the right side of my mouth, but am told that I should have some improvement over the next months. I do understand that I will have some permanent numbness.
The biggest challenge for me is the diet. I will be eating a "no chew" diet for 6 weeks. In the hospial, there wasn't a huge variety, but at home, I think we'll be coming up with a few more ideas. My Brother, who is the biggest foodie around, is currently out grocery shopping for me. He is trying to be very creative and I can hardly wait to see what he comes up with.
So I feel quite good, except I fade out pretty quickly with no notice. That's where I am now. I gotta go lay down.
Thank you all so much.
Dx 11/30/2006 Stage I SCC of gum/surgery 01/12/07 resection of the right posterior mandible with a right buccal transpositional flap 3 teeth removed/reconstruction to come in 9-12 months

If you have a blender or food processer you can mix up all kinds of things. Soups, souffles, pasta, eggs, pancakes, stews, and crock pot recipes work well. Regards JoAnne

Get Carnation Instant Breakfast VHC. It has 560 nutricionally calories in the small 8oz can. You must get it through your pharmacy like Walgreens or CVS, etc. I still drink it to supplement my diet because eating is still very boring.

Here's to a speedy recovery. Keep that blender going and try lots of soups and milk shakes.

I am not that many years removed from smashing up food for my babies and I haven't forgotten all of the old tricks. Who knew how tasty a mushed up banana could be? And this is one I might be able to market: smushed up frosted cupcake, mixed with milk. Even the kids liked that one. And so easy to swallow.
I am anxiously awaiting the swelling to subside a little bit. My face is as hard as a rock and that's pretty uncomfortable. Some of the numbness is starting to wear off and I am actually noticing a few new pains that were masked by the numbness. Aside from the obvious incisions, it's pretty banged up in there, lots of random scrapes and cuts.
I feel so lucky to have come through this so nicely. I really was expecting to be knocked completely on my butt for a while. I don't feel like dancing, but I am perfectly able to sit on the couch with a magazine. It is actually quite fun to just be able to rest when I feel like resting. I am usually the caregiver at my house. Caregiver to perfectly able bodied individuals, mind you. The last couple of days have been really nice for me. Someone smashes up food for me. I eat. I have pain, someone brings me my pills. I am tired, I take a nap. I just might milk this for the whole four weeks!!
Thanks for you thoughts and food suggestions. Sorry Amy M, no oysters for this girl, though I am sure that they slide down quite nicely.
Amy
