Joined: Aug 2006 Posts: 2 | My brother has had surgery for oral cancer, floor of the mouth. He would like a second opinion before doing a neck dissection. I cannot find a listing of good hospitals specific for oral cancer. Any ideas? We live in Iowa. | | |

SCC, base of tongue, 2 lymph nodes, stage 3/4. 35 X's IMRT radiation, chemo: Cisplatin x 2, 5FU x2, & Taxol x2. Hooray, after 3 years I'm in still in remission.

Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 4,918 Likes: 67 | Please also check out this OCF web page, about a third of the way down is a link titled "best hopitals" The page also has a link to the NCI designated centers http://www.oralcancerfoundation.org/resources/index.htm The two previous posts mention great facilities in your area, but some people travel to facilities remote from their home location, they may have family near one of the highly ranked ccc's, or choose them for clinical reasons.

Not sure where in Iowa you are, but you may want to consider researching the University of Chicago Hospitals. They are pretty progressive w/their OC treatment. I researched several docs and hospitals prior to my mom going through treatment. Please feel free to email me if I can answer any questions for you.

Mom's caregvr. DDS failed to dx 01/03. Dx Stg IV SCC 05/03. Induct. chemo, IMRT, 5FU, H, Iressa, Neck disect, radiation. Dad's caregvr. Dx 01/04 Ext. Stg SCLC. Mets to liver/bone 08/04. Died 11/12/04. Mom tongue CA dx 06/13, hemiglossectomy (80% removed) 08/13. Clean margins and nodes, but PNI. 6/15/15: Tongue CA at base of remnant tongue. Declined further tx; hospice.
Died 10/13/15. What a long and difficult journey.
