Yesterday I asked about (finally) about a generic and was told "of course". Walgreens gave me a 3 month supply of Levothyroxine for $12....that's only $4 per month. My wife later chimes in that Wal Mart is probably cheaper!!!
Anyway for those who are slow like me check out the generic.

Be careful of the generics! I take brand name Levoxyl and although the drug is the same, my endocrinologist warned me that if I switch brands the dosages may not be the same.
Check with your doctor - you might need to have your thyroid levels checked again.

Joined: Feb 2005 Posts: 2,019 | I have been taking the generic (levothyroxine) from the start (almost 2 years ago) and get it for about the price you mentioned through my insurance, though probably walmart would do it for a little cheaper, the gas I would spend to get there isn't worth it to me. But yeah, I'm sure it's a lot cheaper than the non generic and they *should* be completely the same--though maybe something about the coatings being different could cause the ame dosage to have different effects I suppose.

Joined: May 2008 Posts: 551 | I think its because levothyroxine sodium is fairly unstable. That's why it should be taken on an empty stomach - since its so easily overwhelmed.

Joined: Nov 2007 Posts: 212 | I've been on Synthroid for years for thyroid issues that predate my cancer diagnosis. I tried switching to the generic version and found the results in managing my Hashimoto's Disease not the same despite the equivalent dosage. My endochrinologist switched me back to Synthroid and the symptoms disappeared. Despite similarities in the meds there are differences and just as with anything else they must react with your unique chemistry. The generic might work for some and is worth a shot, but talking with your doctor and monitoring symptoms would be prudent.
Cancer of Tongue, SCC early Stage 1, Dx 3/13/07, partial glossectomy 4/14/07 found no residual carcinoma and a granular cell tumor with pseudo epitheliomatous hyperplasia.

Your levels will change with time and age, and adjustments in dosing will be necessary. This has to be taken on an empty stomach first thing in the AM or its effectiveness is compromised. Irregularity in times taken, stomach contents and more can throw its effectiveness way off.
