Haven't seen the word radical put in front of external beam before so I still don't know if he had IMRT but the word radical doesn't sound to good combined with radiation. Was he clamped down to the table and wear a mask?

Not trying to scare you but the mask is standard with the IMRT treatment and after they put it on you they clamp it down to the radiation table to insure that you don't move the area targeted with the highly sophisticated radiation beam pathway.

Something that helped me break down the thick mucous was rinsing my mouth out with a mixture of 1 tablespoon baking soda, 1 tablespoon salt, in 1 quart/liter of water. I would rinse constantly throughout the day and would go through at least 1 bottle of this mixture a day. I was told this mixture also helps keep the mouth clean.

Glad to hear he had IMRT and glad to hear he's doing better. This Tx really does a number on us.

The thick secretions could go on for quite some time. It was one of the worst side effects for my husband (2004). He found that sleeping w/ a humidfier helped a little and drinking water too. He went through a box of tissue a day trying to clear the secretions as he coughed and gagged them up. We would pull the stuff from his mouth w/ tissue many times a day. But it DOES eventually get better.

Your dad will be fine. He is going thru what most of us here have gone thru. Like everything, it all takes time no matter what it is.

Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.
