Synthroid Oral Side Effects
Symptoms of low thyroid levels include fatigue, muscle aches, constipation, dry skin, weight gain, slow heart rate, sensitivity to cold, or dry brittle hair that tends to fall out easily. These symptoms should disappear as your body adjusts to the medication. If they persist or become bothersome, notify your doctor promptly.

Headache, nervousness, trembling, sweating, increased appetite, diarrhea, weight loss or insomnia may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly.

In rare instances, some hair loss may occur during the first few months of starting this drug. This effect is usually temporary as your body adjusts to this medication. If this effect persists or worsens, notify your doctor promptly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

Seek immediate medical attention if you have any of these very unlikely but serious side effects: chest pain, rapid or irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, seizures.

An allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

AND..that it would probably be a life time drug. I don't think I know anyone that is on it so I didn't know if any of the side affects were "real" or just cautionary.

This is a patient sheet for the drug. If you look in the PDR or get the doctor's package insert, you will see that the vast majority of these "side effects" occur in less than 1% of the population taking the medication, and many of them could not be attributed to the medication conclusively, as the number of those on a placebo reported similar instances/rates of the same symptom in tests blind tests.

I have been on this for over 30 years and have had the dosage adjusted up or down several times. It is very important to have regular blood work because the dosage must be varied precisely with the need and a slight change can have a big efect. When I was first on it I had problems because I did not go for the blood work. Once the dosage was cut, I was OK. It may require several weeks or even a few months for the thyroid function to level out. I can sometimes tell by a cluster of changes that I need a different dosage.
As Brian says, the side effects listed could be symptoms of various other situations and may be only temporary. Many of these are meerly an indication of a need for adjusting dosage and are only uncomfortable situations. "Notify your doctor promptly" because you may need to have the dosage changed.
You are probably in more likely to sustain a serious injury in your own kitchen or bathroom than you are to suffer from the possible side effects of thyroid medication. If you go back and read the list you will see that the more serious effects are ones for which you would seek immediate help anyway.
