I forgot the name of the artery in the neck this fast. LOL I have to have a needle biopsy in this big artery the 22nd. I have a question, swhen they do blood gases in the wrist, will this hurt as bad in the neck?? I am sick of being in pain 24 hrs a day and am not looking forward to this. Dr called me this afternoon and talked about it. If it shows positive, I have to have a radical neck dissection on the right side. All I want to know is how much pain is involved with this biopsy . Thanks in advance for the answer.

I don't think they are actually going to biopsy the artery itself but the surrounding tissues and nodes. Having had this done a few times, it is uncomfortable, and I am always anxious about it, but as pain goes it ain't nothing compared to where you have been.... and it is only temporary while they have the needle in and wiggle it a bit, no discomfort as soon as they take it out. If the idea of it all is freaking you out a bit, ask your doc to give you some anxiety meds to take before the day of the deed... like for me, they need to give them to me as soon as they even TELL me they are going to do it again. This is not because it is such a bad deal to go through, it is because I am the world's biggest puss and whiner. Clonazapam (Klonopin) 1MG when anxiety gets the best of me - mother's (and Brian's) little helper.

If you are having a Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) which I had, the doc simply sticks a needle into the suspected area(s) and withdraws fluid hopefully containing suspected cells. It takes all of 1 minute or so and I felt no physical pain other than the usual prick. Mentally I was still new to the whole cancer thing so I was very uncomfortable with the thoughts bouncing around in my cabeza. Jim, after all you've been thru, this is a walk in the park.

Yeah - Dan had 3 of those during DX and it was not a big deal at all. Just like David described.

Wow - I didn't know they could actually biopsy an artery. Yeah - get you some "feel good" stuff before you go in :-). I'm sad to hear you've lost 10 more pounds. Can you get anything down other than the VHC? I wish we could all be there to help you. You remind me so much of my grandfather - just matter of fact, to the point and a heart as big as the moon!!! Good luck to you with the biopsy and I'll pray that you can get some weight back on.
