David, If all you got from that post was that I "have it out for you" I have to question whether you even read it carefully.

I was trying to tell you how that sort of "why did this bad thing happen to you?" made me, personally, feel, when you did it to me--as well as how I see other people kind of reacting. I said, and I will say it again in hopes it might get through a second time, that I respect both your curiousity and your good intentions.

I also thought you might be willing to see that you can still make people feel bad despite good intentions and that you wouldn't want to do that and so would want feedback if you did. Perhaps I was wrong in that assessment.

Just a thought - but personally, I do like to be able to consider all the possibilities of why something happened. Knowing why helps me to adjust my present or future behavior or to try to do something about it. Knowledge brings some measure of control over a situation and can lead to positive action. More important than why bad things happen to good people is - where do we go from here?

If people could actually know why they got cancer, or why they got a recurrene, or why they were unlucky enough to get esophgeal strictures, I think it would be useful knowledge--but, again, in any individual CASE, the best a doctor can do is talk about factors that MAY have caused it. With drinking and smoking and HPV there is some good evidence about the causal relationship existing across patients but for any one patient it is still at best a probability.

Believe me, I have a LOT of curiousity about the causes of oral cancer, recurrences, and swallowing problems. And what I do to satisfay that curiousity is read about research. Not imply to people coming her for support that they should be able to explain why this happened to them.

But I'm repeating myself and I have a rule about dialogue on the internet when I feel like I'm just not being heard. The rule is--repeat yourself three times and then let it go. And I think I'm there.

I personally feel much more comfortable answering posts when i have all the facts, and as much information as i can get, therefore if i was considering giving help or advice,i think i would ask the person involved what i thought were pertinent questions on how much detail about their diagnosis they were in posession of.
David is just one of a few seasoned posters who don't indulge in flowery platitudes, and although that may hard to swallow at first,i for one found it far less hurtful or offensive than some very blunt judgemental remarks made about Robins lifestyle choices by less sensative posters.

David was sorely missed during his abscence from the boards a few months ago and i for one hope he keeps on being such a helpful and proactive member of this forum.

I have never found a 'why' question offensive.
Sometimes, whilst in the muddle that is shock/horror/fear, if I've been asked a 'why' question, that in itself has been a support because it makes me take a step back and take breath--and realise that it would never have done any good to rant at the world anyway--you get a grip on questions which can, might, or never will be answered.
And those of us with shameful habits/lifestyle know full well anyway what has caused/contributed to our disease.

LOL Brenda,, no wonder you are my hero. You tell it like it is too. As for me, I have had all the shameful life styles that they say can cause it. Hell why lie, one of the ones that know me best might read what I type here.

I plan on being a 25 year survivor but I hope 3 years from now there's no new people to post to, just us old fogies.
