Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 82 | I have heard of all sorts of mouthwashes for managing the pain, thrush, etc., associated with our condition. I have heard 'Miracle' mouthwash, 'Miles 480' mouthwash, 'Dukes' mouthwash. The first mouthwash I had was compounded to mimic natural saliva, with the same pH, etc., etc., but the one that really worked was the Miles or Dukes... equal parts of Maalox, Lidocaine, Benadryl and Nystatin...Now this one really works... anyone familiar with what I'm talking about? I've seen mouthwash mentioned several times throughout, so I thought I would share this in case anyone was missing out on a good thing.

It is known by many names, including the ones you've mentioned above. Basically the same ingredients, some in differing proportions.

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 5,260 | John, I have a liquid called Lortab that works real well, in fact too well if you take too much, LOL and I also use Biotene which does a good job for awhile. The best place to get biotene that I have found is WalMart. It's price is half of what the drug stores want. $5.12 a bottle. The Lortab has a narcotic in it and makes you feel fancy free. LOL
Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.

There are lots of rinses and mouthwashes out there. You just have to find out what works best for you. The most important thing to remember is to choose one that contains no alcohol.
The Miles/Dukes you are using is a good one. The maalox acts as a lubricant and antacid, lidocaine is a topical anaesthetic whish helps to temporarily relieve pain from minor irritations and mouthe sores,benadryl is an antihistamine that stops the production of histamine that contributes to pain and inflammation so that healing can occur and nystatin is an antifungal that will stop and/or control "thrush" or candida outbreaks.
Other products like the Biotene line are very good and relatively inexpensive. Brian has a link in the dental section to the Biotene website. They will send you free samples by mail if you ask. Oral B, Closys, and Breath Rx to name a few more, are some of the products I have recommended to patients.
Anyone who is experiencing any level of dry mouth should consider a rinse that contains Ph neutral sodium fluoride so that the teeth stay healthy. Stay hydrated too, drink lots of water.

Thanks... I've always been curious as to the purpose of each ingredient. I just know that it has worked for me. I use mine regularly. I also have used some of the Biotene products as well. Have you seen my blurb on 'After Treatment' problems... the vacuum thing? Please see if you've any ideas. As far as the Dukes/Miles goes, I'm fortunate enough to have a pharmacist relative who just recently made me about a half gallon... pretty cool, huh? Keep on talkin' 'cause I can use all the help I can get! Thanks again.

Jim, Thanks... yes, they don't give away the Biotene, but Mike says they will send samples... one of my next projects to get started on. About the Lortab... I had my fair share of that stuff... kept me in a nod all the day long, but I didn't suffer much. Kinda hated to see that stuff go, but it does definitely serve its purpose in this grand scheme of things. Hang in there buddy, you sound well to have had all those teeth taken... I only had four removed, and feel naked without those! Take care my friend.
