Hi All,
I am sorry that I don't have all the details, but my mother, who is 61, has Oral Cancer and is scheduled for her 5th surgery tomorrow at Sloan-Kettering in NYC, in which they are removing part of her lower jaw and replacing it with a bone from her leg. She has had part of her tongue removed already, but this cancer keeps popping back up. I think that all the Lymph Nodes were clear. I am just wondering what books are out there regarding this type of cancer, what to do after surgery, etc.... I bought a book, Beating Cancer with Nutrition by Patrick Quillin already. Are there any other books that you might think will be helpful?

Thanks
Glenn

Hello, Glenn.

First of all, I hope everything goes well for your mother. She certainly has a tough row to hoe.

I suggest that you explore other parts of this site, which is a rich resource.

http://www.oralcancerfoundation.org/site_map.htm

This is the site map and you can go from there.

Let us know how your mother is doing, and do not hestitate to ask any questions. There are peple on this forum who have had the same procedure.

Hi Glenn, Check with your local hospital to see if they have a medical library available to the public. Then call ahead to the medical librarian and request that they pull the literature on this topic. While harder to read, they usually have the latest info for doctors and you can avail yourself of it. Glenn:
Sloan-Kettering is one of the top comprehensive cancer treatment centers in the world. She could not be in a better facility. Good nutrition is essential for all and helps the body to naturally fight this disease, but it is not a cure.
You can read all the books out there and be overwhelmed with information but that isn't going to make this terrible disease go away.Just be there for your mother as much as you can.

Glenn,

Go to the MSKCC we page, www.mskcc.com. They have a lot of info on there with respect to all aspects of treatment options, I think nutrition is covered.

Glenn,
I had the surgery your mother is about to have. It was done in April of 2003. Please ask any questions you may have.

Glenn - There are many excellent reading selections on this web site. Spend some time browsing there and pick a couple. Many 'cancer books' tend to repeat themselves endlessly. They are often written by survivors with the best of intentions but little real knowledge. Many of the listings here do much better. If you find one you really like, tell us about it. Be strong. Thank you all very much for your help. My mother went into surgery at 0730hrs EST today and it will take a couple of hours to complete. I'm sure I will have lots of questions in the near future.

All, my mother is still in surgery 14 hrs later and is expected to finish up within the next hour or 2. Has anyone here been under that long? The cancer surgery lasted 5 1/2 hrs, and the plastic surgery started right after that and is still going on. They removed a tumor, under the base of her tongue that was .5 inch in diameter, and as my father described it, it had the tentacles. I don't know that much more right now.

My surgery was over 16 hours, they didn't bring me out of the sedation for close to three days. I've had no lasting effects from it, though I did have horrible, horrible nightmares for a few months after the surgery. I always attributed it to my memory somehow remembering some of the things done to me?????????? Who knows.
Let us know how your mom makes out.
