Hi Lolita - You are in the right place. My son has throat spasms every once in a while, but they don't seem to bother him too much. It's been about a year since the end of his Radiation treatment for tongue cancer and he did not have chemo. I'm sure there will be others responding who have had more direct experience, but this is also something you should make sure and mention to your doctor. About the smoking, I have another son who is trying to quit smoking and he told me just yesterday that since he got interested in one of those electronic games that his son got for Christmas, it has decreased his smoking quite a bit! Maybe that would be something to try?

Lolita,

I'm not trying to minimize the addictive power of nicotine but you must start by saying that "I WILL NEVER SMOKE ANOTHER CIGARETTE AS LONG AS I LIVE" and mean it. I was a teen smoker as was just about everybody I knew. I tried many times in college to quit and always found a reason to start up again until someone told "quitting means you will never smoke another cigarette as long as you live." I had never thought of it that way and it was tough but it was what worked for me 40 years ago.

Lolita,

I get spasms through out my neck. I continue to go to massage therapy for my "wooden neck" which does help temporarily. I bought a little cheap vibrating massager for home and use it when I watch TV, seems to help a little to.

I was 20+ year smoker and at the end, before I quit, I was up to 2pks a day. I had tried many times to quit before and failed. When the Dr looked at me and told me I had cancer, I knew that I had probably brought it on myself. I knew all the dangers but continued anyway. I didn't quit that day, I finished the pack I had while I contemplated my life. Then looked at my son's face and knew that I had to do anything I could to spend as much time with him as I could. It wasn't easy by no means!! I approached it as I'm not smoking today. I had to change some lifestyle trigger habits for a while, but now I can drink a cup of coffee today without thinking about a cigarette. I still miss it from time to time, but it does get easier.

Whatever your motivation, start with not smoking the next cigarette...

Tim

Hi, Lolita
I am 6 months out from chemo and rad for tonsil cancer, I have been having earaches for a couple months. I am assuming it is from scar tissue. My acupuncturist told me that the radiated tissues will try to shrink up a bit.(So maybe it would make one side of your neck look smaller?) Hang in there 'til Jan.13, I'm sure all will be fine. Easier said than done, though. Teresa

Left tonsil SCC, HPV+. T2N0M0. Tonsillectomy 3-07, bilateral radiation, cisplatin 3x, Tx completed 6-06. Clear PET 4-01-2008.
Thyroidectomy 5-9-08, resulting in permanent surgically-induced hypoparathyroidism and adrenal problems. Bummer.

I have a lump in my neck where the Dr did a dissecetion on Aug 3rd.. It is thick and I can't even feel a pulse where as before I had a good pulse there. The right side is just fine. I just think it's part of the healing process and will gradually return to normal.

I am 6 mos post tx and started having spasms/difficulty swallowing about 1 1/2 months ago. It has even caused me to choke a few times because the food gets hung up in the back of my throat and won't go down or come back up. It makes me scared to try and eat anything. I am re-learning how to eat to begin with because I have been on the peg tube from the beginning. I had a modified barium swallow test done and the speech therapist said everything looked normal. She said that if there was any soft tissue problems that they wouldn't show up though. I went to see my main oncologist the other day. He said I am still cancer free. However he did say that my throat shows signs of radiation changes. I am going to continue seeking help for this because I will be very depressed if I can never eat normally again! Have you had problems with choking too?

Nine years out. New normal with limitations, but surviving and living life to the fullest.
