Jim,
The Jevity only has 250 calories per can, so my mom would need two of those to get the same number of calories(actually a bit less) than the Carnation VHC. To be honest, I think it all depends on what you can tolerate. My mom was given Nutren (I think that was the name) when she was in the hospital last and she wound up getting sick every time she ate.

Good luck with this. We have been through a lot with the PEG in a very little amount of time - less than 3 months, so I am happy to help.

On another note, the other thing that was helping my mom when she was getting sick was to use Pedialyte instead of water as her liquid when doing feedings. Since she was getting sick so often from Ethyol injections we were doing anything we could to help keep the food down and get her some nutrients/vitamins/liquids. We give her the non-flavored variety through the tube with all of her feedings and meds now, and that is working great.

Caretaker to my best friend, my mom. Age 60 - never smoked or drank. St IVA oropharynx. 37 radiation tx, 8 carboplatin tx. Diag 5/31/07-TX completed 8/16/07-good PET 10/10/07. Passed away 3/28/08 due to weakened blood vessels from tx. Now watching over her triplet grandsons born on 5/19/08.

Amy, There are different kinds of Jevity. The kind I use has 285 calories per can. As for swallowing thick vs. thin liquids, I heard from a speech pathologist that thin liquids are actually harder to swallow for many people--can't recall why that is.

I think the issue of having fiber in your food if you are tube feeding may be more important if you are using the PEG really long term. But more fiber also means less problems with constipation during treatment.

There have been people here who tube feed with one of the nutritional drinks that doesn't contain fiber and then flush a glass of metamucil down their tube as well and have said it worked for them. So it is definitely somehitng that varies for different people--and may vary for the same person who has different needs at different times.
