After I made that post to you I thought "oh yeah, he's an accountant". It would be nice if there were neat little boxes for everything about this disease but I don't think we're quite there yet. Bill, I hear you about the coffee. It actually took about 10-12 months for coffee to taste good to me again but now coffee and coffee flavored stuff are a happy part of my day again... Nelie

In the 3 months since ending treatment I've had a total of 2 beers and 1 Margarita. Since my sense of taste is still somewhat distorted, they weren't totally enjoyable. Based on that, I have no immediate plans or desire to have more. The Margarita, in particular, tasted odd. Anyone who has had one knows there is both a sweet and sour aspect to the taste sensation. Although taste is gradually returning, my sweetness receptors have been the last to come around. It was very odd to only taste the sour aspect of the drink.
Probably the single biggest reason I'm staying away from the stuff is because I am still battling dry mouth (haven't been on Pilocarpine long enough to know if it will make a difference). Alcohol has a drying effect, so I figure it's the last thing I should be consuming right now.

In answer to Buzz' question to the doctor about whether or not he could resume his habit, Dr. Sullivan emphatically stated that Buzz could MAYBE have a beer on special occasions such as his birthday, Christmas, etc., but that he was never to resume his daily habit. The doctor stated that it was HIS belief that alcohol contributes to HNC reoccurrances....

One strain of this virus can cause cervical cancer; another strain causes genital warts. HPV has been found in some oral cancer tumors (largely those at the base of the tongue). If you do a search on these boards for HPV, you will find many postings. -- Leslie

April 2006: Husband dx by dentist with leukoplakia on tongue. Oral surgeon's biopsy 4/28/06: Moderate dysplasia; pathology report warned of possible "skip effect." ENT's excisional biopsy (got it all) 5/31/06: SCC in situ/small bit superficially invasive. Early detection saves lives.
