I'm new to this and reading the info on the bottom of people's entries, I'm trying to identify if any are melanoma patients?

I don't think there is a way to search the signatures (Brian, is that a field that can be added for searching in the directory?).

Go to the search link at the top of each message-board page. Use melanoma as your search term and be sure to choose Search All Open Forums to maximize results. I looked quickly and found at least one -- screen name Michael Ballon. Perhaps you could get his e-mail address from his profile (search the directory using his screen name or member number) and write him.

All the best,
Leslie

April 2006: Husband dx by dentist with leukoplakia on tongue. Oral surgeon's biopsy 4/28/06: Moderate dysplasia; pathology report warned of possible "skip effect." ENT's excisional biopsy (got it all) 5/31/06: SCC in situ/small bit superficially invasive. Early detection saves lives.

Thre has only been the one that I know of. There is no way to search signatures. It is relativley rare, and the one person that has posted here is still doing well though he has been told that his long term prognosis is not positive. Without knowing why you are looking for this in particular, I will just comment that melanoma in all areas, oral or otherwise, is very hard to cure, and has poor survival rates.

My mother had melenoma on her left arm and they took out a chunk of flesh so large it looked like a shark bite in "Jaws" - but she survived it. It is a particuarly insidious and agressive cancer.

I just got back from a 6 day bike ride through the San Juan Islands (Wa state) and one of the other participants had had malignant melanoma 10 years ago, and was doing great, no recurrence. So I was happy to see a good outcome for someone, as it is often not that way, as both Brian and Gary have said.

Thank you all for your responses. Brian, it is my brother who is fighting the huge fight. As I was reading the accounts of others, I found my self wondering just what type of cancer these unfortunate folks had, and if any of them were oral melanoma sufferers like my brother. At almost 2 years since diagnosis, he now is stage 4. frown Thank you all!
