Tom and I are really looking forward to this Now, will everyone be wearing a flower/ribbon/pin/tie/hat so that we can pick each other out in the crowds? (Or we could all duct-tape some popsicle sticks onto fingers and just hold up hands as a signal) Tom and I will probably get into town sometime on Friday. If anyone is interested in getting together that evening, let me know. I'll have my sister find a good meeting place. According to Dan's plans, we'll not be able to stay up late, however! Getting Tom up and out by 7 AM will be a REAL challenge! I sent Eileen info on a beachfront hotel in case anyone needs some help. Tom and I like this one. The Seahawk is an older hotel with out-of-style furniture (think the '50's!) and a certain quaintness. We especially loved being able to open the door to the balcony and leave it open all night long...fresh air and the sounds of the surf! They are charging $65 a night for that weekend in April; pretty cheap, really. If the weather is nice, you'll be able to at least sit on the soft sand - - the water will certainly be too cold for even a big toe! http://www.vabeachvacations.com/seahawk/default.asp This is the website and they have a virtual tour http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUser...ahawk_Motel-Virginia_Beach_Virginia.html Other Reviews: Overall: THE SEAHAWK MOTEL HAS ALWAYS BEEN A FAMILY FAVORITE. IT IS REASONABLY PRICED. YOU GET JUST AS MUCH FOR YOUR MONEY AS YOU WOULD IF YOU HAD PAID $200/NIGHT DOWN THE STREET. IT IS CLEAN AND WELL MAINTAINED. Was this review helpful? Yes - No (Report Problem) Decent Place to Stay by Melissa & Rick from Collegeville, PA, Phila suburbs 08/25/04 Overall: GOOD: My wife and I found the accomadations clean and convenient. The staff was friendly and attentive. They didn't kiss our butts like a 5 star, but they didn't charge 5 star rates. On site parking, near a convenience store and 3 diner type resturaunts. BAD: The final bills had an error in their favor. We hated the airplane type pillows on the beds. Overall: Our room didn't have microwave oven or coffee maker as we were expecting but we found the staff very friendly and helpful. They let us check in early with our 2-year-old. We were also able to make reservation in the last minute in August. It is a great location: it is close to the action but the beach is not overcrowded. This hotel is not new and fancy but clean and friendly.

The walk itself is coming along. There have been some minor glitches but not to bad, gives us some well learned lessons to use for the next walk. I will be there, of course, along with my 7 children, three grandchildren, one husband and possibly my mother who might fly in that weekend from Maine. What type of food do we want for our Saturday night dinner?? I would like to make a reservation for all of us. Minnie

Steak, seafood, Italian? You know the area so go out on a limb and pick somewhere nice that can handle a large group.

Maybe someplace with a good, varied buffet or smorgasbord? That may be the easiest way to please everyone. I'm not particular, so anything would suit me. I'm probably bringing young grandchildren. Assuming that this meal includes everyone, a family friendly place would be good.

I eat ANYTHING and haven't been to a restaurant in quite awhile, so anything will do, Minnie. My sister said The Olive Garden would probably be a nice place - she thinks they have 'party' rooms, and there is something for everyone on the menu. This will be fun - and probably loud! Nicki

I'm looking at hotels since I really need to get something booked SOON and was wondering if we decide to stay on the beach......how long of a drive would it be to get to the park? Thinking about the Seahawk or something else in the North Beach area, from 30th St down thru 20th St. I have found some maps, but mileage alone isn't always a good indicator of the time it actually takes when you consider traffic lights, etc. I'm not a city driver and probably should just stay close to the park, but am just not sure yet. Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks, Rosie

Takes you about 15-20 minutes, less if there is no traffic. I can tell you that there are alot of nice things around both areas you have to choose from. The beachfront has all the tourist attractions, the Greenbrier area has tons of shopping, eating, rollerskating, movies, etc. I wouldn't let the drive discourage you from staying waterside if you love the beach. See you soon, Minnie

It's getting close to the big day so I wanted to give everyone an update. I know many of you can't make it but you will be there in our minds and in our hearts. The Walk is on April 9th and will take place at Chesapeake City Park. Registration begins at 8am and walk starts at 9am, ending sometime around 3pm. We are close to hitting the $10,000 mark if all promises of sponsorship are followed through with and that's not including any money from walkers or product sales the day of the event. Danny, Carol and Bobbi have gotten ALOT of money for our foundation and Brian and I were able to get some of the companies to donate also. Remember that all of you can ask for donations to give to the walk even though you cannot be here.
During the day we will have professors and students from the Virginia Dental School and also the Department Heads of the Eastern Virginia Medical Schools Otolaryngology department doing free Oral Screenings from 9am -3pm. We will have three cheerleading organizations doing performances throughout the day and also joining in the walk. We will have Fest Events there to provide food and other good stuff to eat. We will have speakers that include our own Rosie and the doctor that did my surgery and still manages my care. We have hired a photographer to do the story in pictures and I meet with him for the first time tomorrow night. He will be there the day of the event to get pics of all of us. We also have a writer from California, April, that is writing the story that will go with the pictures. Brian is going to work his usual magic and try to get some media attention for our efforts. Danny is our OCF team captain and he and I will be setting a meeting time for Friday within the next few days. I have staff ID and staff Tshirts for all of us that Brian has worked hard getting for us. I am still working on the radio and news crews. They have this horrible habit of not being dependable and it's been a major effort to get a simple call back. I have faith though that they will come through for us. We have banners and table banners for the day of the walk, it will be set up very professionaly. We also have specific Tshirts. I will say that the response from the dental community has been shameful. I sent out hundreds of postcards with all the walk information and I got a total of three phone calls.....it shocked me. I bought a answering machine to handle all the TONS of calls from dental offices that I expected to get. Didn't happen. That has been my biggest dissapointment as I counted on that to be the majority of our walkers. I am also working on a tribute to our lost members. I contacted as many family members as I could and they have sent me pictures, stories, interesting thing concerning their family member. This will be an uplifting tribute, not something that will be depressing. After all, they are part of the reason we are all doing this walk. This has been a learning experience but a rewarding one. More then I had anticipated but nothing is worth doing that doesn't challenge us. I hope all of you can find a way to support the walk. Minnie
