Joined: May 2005 Posts: 497 | I forgot to ask today at the center why the inside of my lower lip has white patchy looking things on it. Its not sore or anything. It feels rough when I run my tongue over it. Not sandpaper rough but raised and thick in spots rough. Should I show them or do you think its not biggie?

Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 3,552 | Hold nothing back at this stage! Yes, they should know EVERY change that is happening. If it's thrush and you drag your feet, it could become life threatening. This is a day by day battle. Do not let your guard down. Getting on top of issues early is paramount.

Mark, 21 Year survivor, SCC right tonsil, 3 nodes positive, one with extra-capsular spread. I never asked what stage (would have scared me anyway) Right side tonsillectomy, radical neck dissection right side, maximum radiation to both sides, no chemo, no PEG, age 40 when diagnosed.

There are a wide variety of things this might be...the advice is good to bring everything to your doctor's attention. If it is Candida, the good news is that with Diflucan over 5 days or so you can clear it up if it is caught early.

Seems as if my lower lip is getting dry on the inside and I, unaware of it, am constantly running my tongue over it and irritating the thin skin. The rad nurse said to dab the Miles solution on it several time a day as this would keep it moist plus it has an antibiotic in it. TG is wasn't thrush!

Joined: Feb 2005 Posts: 2,019 | Barb, fwiw, I also had (and, two months later, still have--though they are healing at last) those patches and was told they are all a part of mucositis, not thrush. Because my lower teeth are not saliva-coated anymore, my lower lip rubbed against them during rad and produced those pacthes.
In fact, I have white patches in a couple of places on the lining of my cheeks too--same deal. Don't be surprised if they take a while to heal.
SCC(T2N0M0) part.glossectomy & neck dissect 2/9/05 & 2/25/05.33 IMRT(66 Gy),2 Cisplatin ended 06/03/05.Stage I breast cancer treated 2/05-11/05.Surgery to remove esophageal stricture 07/06, still having dilatations to keep esophagus open.Dysphagia. "When you're going through hell, keep going"

Joined: May 2005 Posts: 497 | Oh wow. I am glad to know that so I don't panic. After I read Brians post I ran in the bathroom and scraped to see if it came off. Man that was a relief to see it was still there and nothing under my nails. Whew. Close call. How many different side affects does radiation have? I mean it seems like new ones every week. Some hang around for weeks and some only last a day or two. I hate surprises.
