Joined: Apr 2002 Posts: 52 | I finished my first week of RAD and am already noticing dry mouth and a bit sore. What really bothers me is being nauseous, and having indigestion. They told me it is not related to the RAD, but I wasn't sick like this before it started. I sometimes think I am so freaked out by this cancer I'm making myself sick. Has anyone else had this problem?

Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 12 | Hi, When I had my radiation treatment I also suffered from nausea. My oncologist gave me compazine and it worked for me. He also suggested a drop of peppermint oil on the tongue and burning peppermint scented candles at home. I hope one of these ideas work for you. Good Luck. Anita  | | |

Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 4,918 Likes: 70 | I'm not sure what your doc is referring to...I don't think that I have ever talked with anyone who wasn't nauseated. A lot of the sensation is due to the muck that is thickening up in the back of your throat and being swallowed. It's part of the process; I don't think you are experiencing anything to worry about. I had it so bad at times that I too was given anti-nausea drugs.

Did the peppermint oil on your tongue burn? How long did you use the oil? Do you still use it today and does it help? I have never heard of anything like that and I would have gladly tried anything more natural back then for pain and naseau. Interesting tidbit of information, could you expand on it a bit more? SCC first time 1989, with a diagnoses of 'cancer in situ' removed lesion, no other treatments.
SCC recurrence 1997 of tongue and floor of the mouth. Stage III /IV Hemmiglossectomy (removed over 60% of tongue/ floor of the mouth), free flap, modified neck, RAD and Chemo(cisplatin, 5fu) simutainously.
Cancer free 6, yes, six, years!

The peppermint oil is very strong and only one drop should be used, I put the drop as far away from my surgery site as possible and it did not burn. The oncologist told me if if burned to discontinue usage. I still use the peppermint oil at times and it does help me. I hope all is going well for you. Anita | | |
