I think I have stage IV Basal cell lip cancer that has spread to my ears, neck bones and maybe other areas. My question is how does a doctor determine the extent of basal cell cancer spreading and what is the best type of doctor to handle this. Also what would be the best type of treatment for systemic basal cell cancer. Thanks for any help.

The answers I would offer for your questions are as follows:
The best way for you to know the extent of any illness you might have is to have an examination by competant medical people.
After that, follow their suggestions for a course of treatments if necessary.

Mark, 21 Year survivor, SCC right tonsil, 3 nodes positive, one with extra-capsular spread. I never asked what stage (would have scared me anyway) Right side tonsillectomy, radical neck dissection right side, maximum radiation to both sides, no chemo, no PEG, age 40 when diagnosed.

I'm interested in the techniques and procedures (if any) to standarly determine the extent of basal cell cancer spreading. I'm not interested in finding a competant doctor that I can trust, I've been thru 4 so far and I haven't come close to that description. In the mean time I'm reading all the anti-cancer books and gobbling down anti-oxidants and supplements to hedge my bets, they are helpful.

I would think that rather than trying to learn (in a very short time since this moves quickly) enough to determine your own treatment and diagnosis possibilities, that the first priority would be to get in the hands of someone who is indeed competent.
