Mine is Stage 4, but it turns out it's secondary to Primary lung.
First symptoms appeared for me in January this year, am still here in September! Had steak for dinner tonight, then talked on phone with friends for about an hour!
I think you need to go with your dad to appointments and find out what the 'treatment plan' is going to be, and read as much as you can on this site so that he has a better understanding of what's proposed.
Give as much info as you can and you'll find lots of useful suggestions here.

I can safely say that you will not find anyone posting in this forum that would not advise your father to try whatever is made available to him to try to prove that it is NOT too late. There are many Stage 3 and Stage 4 survivors here.

I would suggest that he seek treatment at a CCC (comprehensive cancer center).

I like emmylou's point!!! If your dad doesn't think his life is worth spending money on to save, it is time for you to step in and convince him he is worth it.

Thank you for the advice. I have tried to talk to him many times and let him know how important he is to me and the family and that i want him to be around to watch his other three kids get married and have kids. He says that he leaves it in gods hands but wont get medicated. Am i just being selfish tryin to convince him to go to the doctors? i feel so bad.

I don't want to discuss religion here, but I think that, short of a miracle, and yes, I do believe that God chooses to perform them occasionally, the course without treatment will be pretty predictable. You are not being selfish at all. As I understand it, untreated oral SCC is not a pleasant journey.

Tell your father that he will put you and his family through a much more horrible ordeal if he simply does nothing. Watching him die a slow, horrible death would not benefit anyone. His treatment will be tough, I did it for a stage 4 jaw cancer, but he can do it as many others have. Tell him the money spent will spare his family a nightmare AND spare his life.

You are not far from UCSF and Stanford cancer centers -- both are members of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, an alliance of 20 leading cancer centers across the US. NCCN member facilities are where the most up-to-date treatment protocols are developed.

At the very least, your dad should be encouraged to get a second opinion at one of those centers.

Please make sure you know all the facts before you try to pressure him into anything. My husband has stage 4 cancer of the tongue and decided to go with hospice due to other heath problems and the chance that he couldn't make it though the surgury. No it hasn't been pleasent for him but from what I have read here it hasn't been as bad as the treatment. I have a really hard time with the idea that doing nothing for terminal cancer is worse than going though radiation and chemo when you know it will do nothing but prolng it.
Just talk to him and get all the facts
Julie
