He has been awakened recently (about 5 times) because he bit his tongue hard enough to make it bleed! It always happens on the same side of his mouth. He has been a smoker all his life and is now 53. Have any of you ever heard of such a "symptom"?

Numb tongue + teeth grinding is scary. I would have him call his dentist.
