I recently went to my dentist for a checkup at which point he noticed a small white spot on the right side of my tongue. I have a history of ulcers etc., in my mouth all my life. In any event, he said to keep an eye on it at which point I asked for a referral to an oral surgeon. I am going tomorrow and scared to death. Any advice out there?

Hi Rick,

Try not to worry, The spot could easily be fungal in nature and would not be serious. There are more serious conditions that can show up as white patches. You are on the right track to have them looked at, however an ENT (ear nose and throat) specialist may have more experience. What ever it is, be diligent in followup. Don't accept wishwashy answers, don't accept watch and wait either.

Don't think Cancer until you KNOW it is cancer.

Take care and let us know how it comes out.

Mark, 21 Year survivor, SCC right tonsil, 3 nodes positive, one with extra-capsular spread. I never asked what stage (would have scared me anyway) Right side tonsillectomy, radical neck dissection right side, maximum radiation to both sides, no chemo, no PEG, age 40 when diagnosed.
