Surgery may be an option or the physician may recommend radiation treatments possibly with chemo. The only scientifically proven ways to eliminate oral cancer are thru surgery and/or radiation with or without chemo.

You are so fortunate to have had your cancer diagnosed as a Stage 1. Surgery would be the preferable option I would think, though if necessary this could be followed up with radiation. As your cancer has not spread anywhere you would be unlikely to be offered chemotherapy.
Perhaps you could seek a 2nd opinion if you are not satisfied with your current surgeons opinion of going with surgical excision.

PET 6/11 clear.
R) level 2-4 neck dissection 8/1/11 to remove residual node - necrotic with NED
Feb '12 Ca back.. 3/8/12 total glossectomy/laryngectomy/bilat neck dissection/partial pharyngectomy etc. clear margins. All nodes negative for disease. PEG in.
March 2017 - 5 years disease free. Woohoo!
