The old kidneys were left in place. He had his treatments in August & September of 2007. In March of 2008 a Pet Scan showed cancer on one of the old/native kidneys. He had the kidney with the tumor removed without any follow-up treatment as it was all contained. The doctors told him the cancers were unrelated - he was just unlucky enough to have two different kinds of cancer in the same year. Not really sure where his oral cancer came from - Doctors thought maybe a mix of his previous chewing (he never smoked) and the cyclosporine/neoral anti-rejection medicine. We were just so thankful his transplanted kidney made it through the treatments ok. But this is something to keep an eye on. Maybe there are others??
