I see a lot of people say they discovered a lump on their neck. How big of a lump did you experience? I know everyone different. Just wondered if it's like a golf ball or if it's ever smaller. Just curious.

Thanks

Hi wildcat, on St paddy's day 2010, I discovered a lump pretty close to a golf ball under my left ear. It was just there, never remember it being small and growing. just bam! there it was. I went to my PCP about a week late, Got a Ct scan that called for a biopsy of my left tonsil. SCC with mets to one node.

Hi wildcat mine went up and down in size ranging from barely feelable to thumb size never got as big as a golf ball, they did a fine needle biopsy on it which came back negative, this happens quite often and caused a delay in my treatment as they thought it was a branchial cyst. I go in for my regular checkup today, finished treatment mid march and feel great. Good luck on your treatment plan...ken

I would get another opinion from a Comprehensive Cancer Center. I would not lean towards the surgery biopsy but would agree to a FNA but it may be best just to wait and see what develops, if anything.

Hi there... yes a lot of them do discover a lump in their neck. It's usually painless - Mine grew after I was diagnosed with a tongue tumor (non HPV) Often HPV related tumors spread more rapidly to the nodes and are found there first as Base of tongue cancer (essentially found in the throat - not the oral tongue) or tonsil cancer, is generally painless and asymptomatic - except for swallowing issues when it becomes a larger tumor. This is why a lot of BOT cancers are often found at an advanced stage.

Anyway - my tumor was about the size of a small birds egg. 1.4 cm by the time it was removed. Often if they are small and as you noted to not light up, drs don't get excited. I had two oncologists say this to me as I had a small 3mm node light up on my opposite side prior to starting treatment. I was crazy concerned about it so the Rads guy included that side in his radiation plan and charred it nicely. ;o)

Chances are if they are non reactive and small, then it's normal or responding to something else. However, I would keep an eye on all of them. Good luck with your tonsillectomy.
