I had my second dose of cisplatin yesterday. A lesser dose weekly for the last 4 weeks. I haven't been nauseas yet, losing some hair on the back of my neck. The ringing in my ears seems the same, or a little bit louder. I'm not sure yet. The thrush seems to be getting a little bit better, so I am able to swallow a little more. Not enough though. The PEG goes in tomorrow. I will continue to swallow throughout. I just couldn't imagine not being able to eat the way I used to. ..Today is hump day for me as far as Tx goes. 18 days down,17 to go... But I know it certainly doesn't end there.

The peg will make it easier to get food and water in. Please keep sipping water or boost everyday. You are entering the tough month. Keep in mind all you need to do is get thru the next feeding. Then set the clock and do it again. It sucks, no doubt about it. But days turn to weeks then the tough month is done.
Good luck and keep us posted.

If they still insist on giving you more of that chemo, I would at that point go over their head and speak to whoever is in charge of the oncology dept. The ringing in the ears is a known side effect which and cisplatin is known to cause permanent hearing loss in some people. It needs to be changed! Sometimes its so hard being the patient and having to stand up and advocate for yourself. You can do this!!!! Keep swallowing and drinking water several times per day every single day even if it hurts. Keep up the 2500 calories and 48 oz of water daily and you will sail right thru. Best wishes!!! PS... Here are some articles you can print out and take right with you when you speak to your doc about the hearing loss. I have permanent high frequency hearing loss due to Cis and while I don't need hearing aids this IMO avoidable treatment side effect affects my life daily. The longer you are given Cis the greater the damage to your hearing.

Really nasty stuff and those horse pills you have to take.... Anyway after repeated infections finally my dentist said "perhaps you should try eating Activa every day to balance the bacteria in your mouth." Coincidence or not I started eating a cup of Activa every day and have done so now for years and I haven't had a bout of Thrush since.

I will ask my MO. He may suggest only one more dose of cis. and be done, but at this point I want all I can to rid myself of this cancer. With as minimal side effects as possible. Thanks All.

They put my father in law on it for his esophageal cancer as he has bad hearing to begin with. best of luck

I've had 5 different tests or so. My mo moved me to weekly cisplatin for the last dose. Still have ringing in my ears but only have slight hearing loss at the " inaudible" range although I try to still use that excuse around the house, with little success.

I was stunned and my obvious reply was WELL WHY DIDN'T YOU GIVE ME CARBO TO BEGIN WITH??? He said that Cisplatin is the Gold Standard for Head and Neck and Cis doesn't affect everyone so we wait until the patient starts to hear the "ringing". Keep in mind that was 7 years ago but it doesn't appear much has changed.
