Spanish traditionally falls into three categories.

1). Castellano or Castillian is from Spain and used a lot in South America other than Brazil which is Portuguese.

2). Mexican

3). American

Primary difference in proper Spanish is the double L sound becomes J and the s as in esta becomes "lazy" and sounds like eta.

I told her I am sorry because I don't speak Spanish, only English please.

This gives her the responsibility to find someone close to her to help her understand the English speaking website and to be able to ask questions back and forth before posting. I hope this helps.

Children of almost all Spanish speaking countries or homes are now the translators. The more technical things she may have to research. Things may still be lost in translation but such is life. My 84 year old Japanese uncle speaks fluent Japanese, English, Spanish (even Castellano), Russian, German, Portuguese, Italian and a few words in Arabic from his 60+ years as a free lance photojournalist but, unfortunately, he has fallen too many times injuring his head and is no longer communicative as of last December. I do have many friends that speak Spanish and the son of one from Columbia starts dental school in Houston and will be attending the walk in September. I would be glad to ask him if he would like to take this on if you like, although I am more inclined to put the onus on Valentina.

Unable to contact my friend this weekend, however I see here that there are several people here who can at least translate Brian's original message to her. I agree with Anne-Marie's hijack comment. Hoping someone can start a new thread to her with Brian's solution. Let me know if I can be of any help.

It is of concern to me that this thread has become more about the language one speaks than about Valentina's cancer. We should try to be as helpful to one another as we can despite differences in language, culture or available medical resources.

She posted she is in tears most of the time. We've been there. We know how scared she is. Just because she posted in Spanish, regardless of the dialect, is no reason not to help!

Google Translate http://translate.google.com/ is not perfect but it's a start. My partner/caregiver (from Ecuador) and I are more than willing to help. If you're worried about what one is saying in most any language, you can get the basic meaning through that tool and post both the English and Spanish for all to see and read.

Respectfully,

"T"

(Google Translate)

Es motivo de preocupacin para m que este hilo se ha vuelto ms sobre la lengua que se habla sobre el cncer de Valentina. Debemos tratar de ser lo ms tiles unos a otros como nos sea posible a pesar de las diferencias de idioma, cultura o recursos.

Ella public que ella est llorando la mayor parte del tiempo. Hemos estado all.

Respetuosamente,

"T"

Together, Brian, David and myself have come up with a solution to the language barrier problem. While OCF wants to help every single person, at times we just cant. This situation greatly bothers me to turn someone away who is so upset.

If this new member would have someone on her end who is able to post on the forum in English then to translate it back to her that would be the ideal solution. So first we will attempt to see if this is an option. I will have someone contact her thru email asking if this is an option.

Plan B... fishmanpa has generously offered his assistance in this matter. Thank you very much, fishmanpa!!! If you would like to help by corresponding thru email to the new member in her language that would be great. If she would have questions, reposting it on the forum translated into English so the OCF members can reply. The next part could get to be time consuming but it all depends on if she has questions or not. She may just need some moral support. If the new member asks questions then you could translate the replies back to her thru email.

Thanks for the post Christine.

An email was sent offering our assistance in translation and posting to Valentina. Marcia and I will do what we can to help.

Although Google Translate is "Ok" for basic communication, I agree that for more detailed explanations and technical/medical jargon, a more precise detailed translation is necessary. Marcia will be able to provide that.

Marcia would also be able to correspond via Skype is necessary as she uses it to communicate with her family and friends in Ecuador.
We would be able to translate to English and post to get answers to questions and visa versa.

Positively,

"T"
