Joined: Mar 2013 Posts: 40 | Anyone had this same mixture? This is what my Dad is doing. He recently got on the Taxol about 2 weeks ago, but has been on the Carboplatin now for about a month (getting it weekly), and has been on radiation about a month now.
Just wondering if anyone has had this same treatment and if so, how'd it go for you? What side effects did you experience?

Joined: Dec 2010 Posts: 5,264 Likes: 5 | Hi there - it sounded like they are combining chemos. I know people here have had induction chemo or a combination of chemos, but not it combined the way you have described. Chemo usually causes nausea. There are other issues I'm sure but nausea seems to be the common complaint. Best of luck on the rads... The next 4 weeks will be hard but are doable.

Joined: Jul 2012 Posts: 3,267 Likes: 4 | I had induction chemo with Taxotere, Cisplatin. 5-FU, TPF, which is usually continuous for 5 days, 3 cycles or similar. Carboplatin, a Platinum drug, is similar to Cisplatin. I also had Taxotere and Erbitux for a rerurrene for six weeks. Taxotere can cause "hand and foot syndrome", neuropathy, as well as others. Good luck.

Joined: Dec 2010 Posts: 5,264 Likes: 5 | As long as he is getting enough nutrition and fluid things should be okay. People tend to fall apart if they become dehydrated and/or malnourished. It's not easy in fact it's brutal but knowing what you are facing before hand helps in that you are prepared and have something on hand to deal with it. The first few weeks are okay. The last 4-5 (including the two following treatment) are the worst as radiation is cumulative people think rads has stopped the pain will stop but NO. There's also thrush to look out for. Have magic mouthwash and adequate pain meds on hand if you can. Make sure he does his rinses and continues to swallow if he's on a peg. take care.

Nausea is for sure a side effect Kevin had. There was spontaneous vomiting every now and then. Then there's the ropey saliva and hair loss that we talked about. Kevin's RO put him on Diflucan the whole 6 weeks of rads to help with any yeast infections so we avoided those problems. Mouth sores are very common too. The pain meds can also cause constipation so he needs to be aware and handle that issue quickly if it happens!
