Hi, I have had 2 stents last November put in post radiation therapy in 1999. One was in my carotid, one in my Brachial on Right side. Drs. said as long as I had one brachial open I was OK (both were closed). I am wondering if this could have affected other arteries that I am not aware of. I had oral cancer in my right jaw area where I had both surgery and 6 weeks of radiation.

I had only had a doppler done on my carotids and doctors did not discover the brachial closure until I was on the table for the carotid stent. After finding the blockage, they put a stent in the brachial artery as well as the carotid.

DX 1999 Oral Cancer - chewing tobacco.
Had surgery to remove all lymph nodes in head as well as a large section of tissue containing infected node(jaw area) and then 6 weeks of daily radiation.
2 stents 2011 due to damage from radiation. One stent in carotid, one in chest. Now 54 years old.

Sorry Fred, Im not familiar with the surgeries you described. This isnt something very many oral cancer patients have gone thru. I have seen a few with things done with their carotid artery. Hope one of those patients will respond to your questions soon.

Best wishes!

Hello, Fred.

I am sorry for what you have been through. I would think your radiation oncologist and cardiologist (I'm assuming that you have one) would come up with a plan for periodic assessments of your arteries. I'm just guessing, though. Like Christine said, hopefully someone on these forums will be able to share their experience and thoughts on this one.

Best wishes,
Kerri

Hello Fred. I am new to the forum, but came across your post. My husband had received chemo/radiation 8 years ago for stage IV base of tongue cancer. At his annual f/u the CT scan showed significant carotid plaque/narrowing. One side worse than the other (the side with the more direct radiation). He is 58y/o. Previous scans were normal. He is not at the point of the stent, but the progression from normal to significant narrowing in 1 year is concerning.

Keep in mind that especially in men and more likely on the left side, carotid narrowing is a part of ageing and may not be connected to the radiation.
