I've seen a few mentions of Magic Mouthwash which I think my brother might find handy in the next week or so. He is about to start his third weeks of IMRT RADS and is getting blisters on his lip and has a nasty ulcer on the side of his tongue. Is this the sort of thing Magic Mouthwash is for?

Does anyone use it in Australia and has a recipe? I thought perhaps the product names and pharmacy services might be different in the US.

It's a mixture of lidocaine niystatin, an a few other things. There may be a recipe on the Internet that you could show to a pharmacist. Every pharmacy makes it different - it does help. smile I checked my label the last time someone else asked but they hadn't listed e ingredients on it. Someone here might know. I know mine had nystatin in it because I asked my RO for thrush meds - I had a small amount starting and he said use your magic mouthwash - it has nystatin in it. I ended up using manuka honey instead because at that poin I wasn't in pain. Take care!

Did the Manuka honey help? I've seen mention of it as well so checked it out at the supermarket. Do you have to get a special sort from a health food store or something with a greater concentration of whatever the active ingredient is? I see from your signature that a scan in March was clear. Wonderful!

Magic Mouthwash can be made of several different ingredients. It is used to numb sore mouths so the patient can eat or clean their mouth without so much pain. It is a temporary numbing rinse. The patient would take about a tablespoon into his mouth and swish it around for about 15 - 30 second then spit it out. It is NOT to be swallowed. The magic mouthwash I used was made of idocaine, malox, and benedryl. It worked wonderfully!!!

Okay see now that's weird Christine because I was allowed to swallow mine!! So it just goes to show you they all make it different!! Yes the honey helped me! It stings but it cleans, it's an anti inflammatory, anti infectant, antibacterial. Usually pure 16+ manuka or higher I recommended. Please get your the Drs. Approval first. It cleared up my thrush in a day but I only had a small patch!! It also helped stave off mouth sores up to week 6. But like I said it stings. At first. Then it feels good! It doesn't work for everyone but it helped me. Good luck. Hope you can get the mouthwash!

Hi again Sam,
I will send you a message on your other post but just wanted to send you this link. You can search on Manuka (top right search) and come up with lot's of posts and from what I have seen it helps some and not others but it may be wise to check with his doctors. Klo is a friend and also from NSW and she and others have posted some interesting information here.

I was also told to swish and swallow my magic mouthwash. It has Nystatin, Lidocaine, and maybe hydrocortisone?

Please check with your doctor if you get magic mouthwash. Specifically ask him if it should be swallowed or spit out. My doc told me to spit it out and other members have said to swallow it. The numbing agents could affect something in your swallowing and cause you to possibly aspirate. It could be something to do with the different ingredients. Its always best to follow what your own doctor advises for your own safety.

Hi there okay I actually got the recipe from the pharmacy at my hospital today!

Blow my socks off!

1 pkg of cherry flavored kool aid in 2000 ml of water do not add sugar. Keep kool aid in fridge
Mix 100 ml of kool aid with 100 ml of xylocaine viscous 2% (lidocaine) and 100 ml of nistat suspension (nystatin) 300 ml total
Shake well exp date 3 mos from prep time at room temp.

Standard directions - shake well, swish and spit, or swish and swallow - 1 tbsp 15 ml) 4 times daily.

Hope this helps.

The hospital is princess Margaret in Toronto (pharmacy) ph: 416-946-6593

I didn't get magic mouthwash here in London they just gave me mugard.. It was ok but I used it once and then had a allergic reaction! I did use the manuka and it stung and then felt lovely! And I could actually taste it a bit. For me it worked It cleared my mouth sores in days and also I think stopped me getting thrush. Like Cheryl said although we advocate it ask doc first. My docs didn't comment but it worked for me.
Take care of you
