Hi all,

Just a simple question, it has been 7 years since the end of my radiotherapy (SCC, primary near tonsil pillar, mets to neck lymph nodes) and I've had a trillion of root canal therapies (well, it feels like it!). Is it safe now to have a tooth removed?

I've had 2 throat dilations and can swallow but the teeth (or lack of useful ones!) are still a problem with digestive processes.

Tizz, I was told by the maxillofacial dentist I saw prior to my RT that I was ever told that I'd need a tooth removed to come see him first. Suggest you consult with an expert before going further.

Hi Tizz,
You are supposed to need HBO treatments before you can have a tooth extracted. Normally 20 before and 10 after. Make certain whoever you are dealing with is aware of the problems presented by people who have had radiation.

I was only wishfully thinking as I've had so many Root Canals done - one finalised his morning, another next week! I asked my dentist (who is also a tutor at the Sydney Dental Hospital) and he concurred with my thoughts, it's a no way street, just go with the flow! (Excuse my cliches...)
