Good afternoon from sunny and humid South Carolina!

I found OCF several years ago after my mom lost her battle to oral cancer. Every so often I check in to see what's going on.

Now, I am here for a little advice/information.

About two years ago I went to the doctor complaining of a constant lump in my throat. Eventually, I was referred to an ENT (the same ENT that treated my mom, actually) who diagnosed me with laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) and informed me that my vocal cords had already been damaged. I continue to try to keep it under control, but am not having much success. I constantly feel like I have a lump in my throat, have to clear my throat all the time, and am usually hoarse.

My question is, at what point do I need to pursue additional testing or screening for cancer/precancer? I don't want to be a Nervous Nelly about it but I also want to be sure I do everything I can to prevent (or catch early) any possible problems. After seeing my mother go through what she did, I don't want to take any chances. Ya know?

Well, thanks for any feedback or information anyone can offer.

Peggy

Peggy, welcome back to OCF. Im very sorry to hear of your mother's loss to oral cancer. Its such a terrible disease! As far as testing goes, you can only determine if its cancer thru a biopsy. If you are uncomfortable with the doctors results then go see another ENT. Look for one who is very familiar with oral cancer and see what they have to say. Viligence will help you to catch any changes in your mouth/throat very early. Luckily you do not have cancer. Hope it stays that way forever smile
