With OC Month fast approaching I would like to suggest something for the City to do. Maybe start off small like a oral screening at City Hall. Any guidance would be helpful. WE don't have any hospitals in our City but many in the surrounding cities.

In all of OCF's screening events, even the ones partnered with WalMart, we invite local politicos from the Major of LA to council people to come to the screenings. There is a simple reason. Th Mayor never does anything with out media on his tail.... usually invited but often not. It makes the evening news.

We have done a lot of these, and learned a lot from our early mistakes. The most important thing to do when you consider doing a screening, is to do it in a place where lots of people already are coming. (Like at the front door of a Wal-Mart where 30,000 people a day walk through it) This gets rid if the issue of getting people to come to your event, you just need "people wranglers" to talk to the people about the need for the screening, and that it's FREE and painless and only takes a couple of minutes.

If you would like some help working this out, please give me a call and hook up with Susan Lauria, who is coordinating all our events.

Having run a few screenings myself, we can discuss this on Sat. if we have some time. Not sure how busy you are at the restaurant and how much time you'll have to talk.

At last night's Council meeting I brought my idea up under New Business and that was to have our City recognize and sponsor some OC event in April. I mentioned the idea of a free screening and I got a 5-0 consensus approval vote to go forward. Next step is for our City Mgr to get with staff and get back to me so now what do I do in preparation of that meeting? Where do I find the "screeners" ? for example.

Brian good idea re the location as I was thinking the parking lot of City Hall but now I will shift it to say our Walgreen's or our McDonald's. Walgreen's may be better due to it's avg aged patron. Our City doesn't have a Walmart or even a large food chain. All of those are located just outside our City limits.

Any other thoughts?

How about your library, fire hall, or church? All sponsor blood drives around here.

Start with your dentist, who I would have to assume knowing you, does OC screenings. He should then be able to find at least one other dentist that will volunteer his/her time.

Also, contact Susan Lauria. She has 3-4 dentists at her event every year.

All in all, I think that you will probably find that having it in April may be a little too soon to put this together. However, it can be done anytime and accomplish the goal.

No Walmart in Gulfport...oh my.

You need to call me on this and Susan too. There is too much to do to make this happen in april. There is liability insurance to get, and more. Besides it's not like this isn't still going to be an issue in June..... If you are hell bent on this being in April, it could still be done, but it would be hard to capitalize on the other opportunities that the event makes - News stories in the paper before and after, ditto TV, partnerships with other people that make it an event, like a live broadcast from a local radio station from the event.... lots of possibilities that make it more than a screening but an real awareness raising opportunity.

I'll call you guys today and remember I will have the City's umbrella to do this under (at least I assume I will at this point). Re TV, newspaper coverage, etc my wife and I know plenty of those people so I'm sure I can pull that piece off. I'm calling my dentist today and will stop by our Walgreens and see if they are willing to be a part.

Never say never is my motto. Hell I could get this thing done for this weekend if I had to!! lol

David,
Do I remember you saying there is a farmers market or food fair or some kind of a bazaar every Saturday that draws a lot of people? If so, why not do it there?

Take care,
Eileen

That's in neighboring St Petersburg. I really want to start something in Gulfport and perhaps build upon it. Besides the Market in St Pete draws 10,000 or so with over 200 vendor booths plus live entertainment. This would be tough to compete with everything else IMO.

So far not going the way I thought this am. My dentist hasn't returned my call yet and the Manager of Walgreens is on vacation until Monday. ugh

So how many screeners do I need? Have NO idea how many will take advantage of FREE but I really suspect a lot.
