Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 307 | I would like to re-introduce myself. My name is Shelley and my husband Ron is coming up on his 5 year cancer free anniversary. I found this wonderful site 5 year's ago and everyone was so helpful and kind. I use to post more often, but had some computer glitches and was not able to write. But I always kept up to date and read everyones post on a daily basis. I finally got a new computer, and the nerve to introduce myself again....I am in such awe at what a compassionate bunch of people you are and would be honored to be a part of this group again. You are the only people who truly understand what Ron and I went through, and life is about giving back. I really look forward to getting to know all of you!

Caregiver to husband Ron. Throat Cancer. Finished 35 radiation treatments on 11/21/04. 8/2/11 small lesion on lower gum, laser Procedure to remove. 3/6/12 Doc. removed another lesion on outside of his neck. Did a skin graft from his chest to replace the skin on his neck. Went to Heaven on 6/24/12.

Age 58 at Dx, HPV16+ SCC, Stage IV BOT+2 nodes, non smoker, casual drinker, exercise nut, Cisplatin x 3 & concurrent IMRT x 35,(70 Gy), no surgery, no Peg, Tx at Moffitt over Aug 06. Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.

Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 307 | Very funny David....LOL...All in all Ron is doing good! His saliva never did come back so a water bottle has become part of his right hand. We've become experts in knowing how many water bottles to bring whenever we go anywhere. Ron is a finish Carpenter and use to work 6-7 days a week. After the cancer diagnosis, it made him totally re-evaluate his life. He now takes more time to "smell the roses" if you know what I mean. At his last checkup the Doctor at UCLA said "see you in a year Mr. Hoover". It was music to his ears....

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 5,260 | Let me welcome you and Ron back into the fold. Altho I wasn't here 5 years ago , I have a connection with all members old and new from the good old OC.
Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.

Retired Dentist, 59 years old at diagnosis. SCC of the left lateral border of the tongue (Stage I). Partial glossectomy and 30 nodes removed, 4/6/05. Nodes all clear. No chemo no radiation 18 year survivor.

With all the latest Information you can give me. I am a teacher in Thailand after going bankrupt in the UK /England some years ago and could not find work while in my 50s/60 I had a friend working as a teacher in Thailand, he said come here you and get a job teaching, I did and I just love it. All was great until 8 weeks ago, when I found an ulcer at the back of my throat, I sorted it out with Antibiotics, then a week later my lymph node swelled, I went to the hospital in Bangkok, very good Bumrangrad Hospital, after having a MRI scan, to be told last Saturday, I have a mass at the back of my tongue. I have a choice, Cut out my tongue and voice box, I�m now 64 no thank you, or Radiation and chemo treatments. I have read about this treatment working well, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18528311 have any one here heard of it and know I it will help me, I do not think they can give it to me in the UK where I will have to have treatment soon, as my medical Insurance is basic and runs out soon, in Thailand and I have only the wages I make each month no savings. I wonder if anyone has had this, the doctor did say it may be the HMV Virus, so I do not know, if what looks like half the base of my tongue, mass on the MRI scan, can be treated at all. Please help. Thanks for any help you can give me.
"Base of Tongue Cancer", may be HPV cancer. swollen lymph nodes, half the tongue base Now T2/3 N2 MRI scan and simulation mask, 4 Chemo/35 rad of 35. Tumors gone. can eat. MRI April 19th , Nodes now all gone, was 6 cm, weight GAIN to 81 kg but found 2.1 grey area on MRI. Biopsy next.

Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 8,311 | First off did they do a biopsy? and if so of the BOT and or the node? Assuming they did a bio and it was confirmed Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) then I also assume they staged you a III. This cancer CAN ONLY BE DIAGNOSED BY A BIOPSY. Were/are you a tobacco user? If not I would inquire about being tested for HPV. Unless I'm missing something you most likely do not need to have the tongue operated on and may not need a neck dissection as the typical Tx of concurrent IMRT radiation and chemo, most likely Cisplatin, should kill the cancer.

Joined: Sep 2009 Posts: 53 | Yes they took a biopsy of the base of the tongue I go on Saturday to see the results judging by the lymph glad swelling in the last 8 weeks its hard now and about 2 inches each way. No I have never smoked, but I use to drink heavy when I owned a Hotel many years ago, don�t drink now either. Yes I don�t know if they know about HPV tests here in Thailand or UK The MRI scan shows half of the base of my tongue has a mass which looks like cancer will the drugs and radiations shrink that do you know? Thanks for your advice I�m desperate to know anything i can the doctor said I need my tongue out and voice box.
