Continuing to sip on water to keep the swallowing going but notice I gag now even when taking pills.

My Bill had no issues with his from the start, other than, like you, he was sore for a few days.
Just keep the area clean with some dampened gauze pads and place a dry slit pad around and cover with an ace bandage. It will keep you tube in place when not in use.
Keep pushing forward...one day at time..you will soon be on your way to recovery.
