Hello,
Two years ago I was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in situ of the vocal chords. Surgery was done and I have been watched carefully for the last two years. In March I had a regular 3 month check and expressed my concern to my doctor about my constant sinus drainage since Jan. and sore spot in the roof of my mouth that my dentist is puzzled by. He decided to refer me to a rinologist. Well, my appointment is next week and I am getting a little worried. Everything that I have read tells me what sinus cancer treatments are, but no one really shares symptons. In the last three weeks, my neck has gotten quite sore, my ears are starting to hurt and I feel like I have the mumps. I cannot feel any swollen glands, by there is tenderness behind my left ears. I would love to hear from anyone that can give me some insight to all this. I have done alot of reading on cancer of the sinus and I have some of the symptoms. Also, is it possible for it to have moved from the vocal chords to other places like the sinuses? Thanks! Kelly

Kelly,

Calm down and let the appointment answer your concerns. You are potentially getting yourself all worked up over nothing and nobody on this site is going to be able to diagnose you. Good luck and tell us what the doctor says next week.

Kelly, I would ask my dentsit for a referral to an oral surgeon for a second opinon on that sore in your mouth. If he thinks it is worrisome, he can biopsy it and tell you shortly there after in black and white if it is something serious or not. As to seeing the doctor about your nasal drainage and the type of doctor you are going to see, my gut impression is that a separate issue and not the kind of doctor that is going to make an evaluation if you have an oral or oropharygeal cancer or not. I am somewhat disturbed by your symptoms as we sometimes see these things, the sore/spot in your mouth, the throat pain, the ear ache. I am not sure why you are thinking something in your sinus and looking into that, since the only thing you have is drainage, and that could be from anything from a bacteria or virus to just irritation from allergy. I think you need to have that spot in your mouth evaluated by someone who is not just going to be puzzled by it. That dentist should have referred you for another opinion, not just let it go undiagnosed.

Go asap to Oral Surgeon! The ear ache could be many things, but it is one of the first things my daughter and 2 others have had with their diagnosis'. Early symptom, they had associated with sinus stuff too. Just make sure......K?

I thought I would update everyone that has responded to my post. I went first to my throat doctor on Tuesday and had my scope. He said that my vocal chords looked good and that he thought we could stretch our check-ups to 6 months instead of 3. I had told him about the jaw, neck and ear pain. He knew that I was seeing a rhinologist later that afternoon, so he decided to see what he said. Well, the rhinologist did a scope, took my history and said that he didn't think the sinus drainage and pain in the neck and jaws were related. He asked me if I had ever had allergies and I said no. He scoped my sinuses and said that they loooked fine. He put me on a sinus anihistomine for two months. He kind of brushed off the pain in the roof of my mouth and I was the one that kind of had to push something to be done about the aching in my neck, jaw and ears. He ordered a laryngeal Cat-Scan that I had Thursday. I have not heard back yet. So after all that, I am feeling that both doctors do not seemed concerned. Well, I am. Today the aching in the jaws and neck are very uncomfortable. I am guessing that no news is good news huh? That is where I am at. I have decided that if nothing shows up on the scan, my next step will be an oral surgeon. Do you think I am over-reacting?????? Thanks! Kelly

No, I don't think you're over reacting if they can't find the source of your pain. I would keep trying until it goes away or they find an explanation.

Kelley,

The doctors need to find the reason for the pain you are having. Until they can explain why, they need to do the tests, etc...that it takes to determine the result. You are n not over reacting and need to be vigilant about this. My sister had ear pain, too.
Your in my thoughts,

Nancy
