Carboplatin is a mild form of chemo. (I believe it's a 3rd cousin to Cisplatin which is typicaly used in oral cancer chemo). It's used to sensitize the tumors to respond better to the radiation. It seems that most patients experience few or mild side effects.
However, there can be serious side effects such as stomach pain, body aches/pain, diarrhea, constipation, weakness, nausea, vomiting and fatigue. Doctors do a great job of providing medication to take care of most side effects, however a positive attitude, good nutrition will go a long way in helping his recovery.
It is also important to check all medication, even aspirin, he is currently taking, against possible interaction with Carboplatin.
There are also more serious possible complications, but all in all, it the mildest chemo they can give. Check WebMd site under
drugs and medications. Another web site to search is "clinical pharmacology."
Most people find radiation to be more difficult than the chemo as he will also have mouth sores and fatigue from it. Most important with radiation is mouth care: brushing, mouthwaste; both 3-4 times daily.
I hope this helps.
