Depending on what exactly is being irradiated amifostine may not be helpful or needed. There has been a lot written on this here which you can search for (both pro and con).

There is not much you can do during treatment, other than keeping up nutrition and hydration, use painkillers as needed, treat skin irritation and watch out for thrush.
