Hi, Cindy, just wanted to share our experience-close to your Dad's but not quite the same. John had part of his jaw bone removed and replaced with titanium and then covered with skin from his arm. He did have a trach [and a peg tube]. The trach took some getting used to, but it was not as bad as we feared and it was healed after a few weeks. Yes, talking can be difficult for awhile, so get a wipe board for him. John was not allowed to swallow anything for 12 days after surgery and then only small sips of liquids. Following the instructions for care of the trach is very important. John is 64 and this was his 2nd surgery also. Your Dad will need some good nursing when he comes home. Amy
