  If the spot has been there for a couple of weeks and isn't going away, he's wise to have it checked out.  It could be one of many things.  I had a white spot on my gum last year that didn't respond to medication, and my oral surgeon finally took it out and biopsied it.  It turned out to be a benign neuroma (which he said could be caused by irritation of some sort), and thankfully it hasn't come back.
