We have come across a new mouth rinse that may be of benefit to those with mouth sores, and in particular to those who have precancerous leukoplakia. It is a very different product than the Biotene mouthwash which the foundation has found to be heavily used and liked by those that frequent these boards, and it appears that this new rinse acts through a different mechanism. It has been brought to our attention by several patients and dentists, and since the company was close to OCF, I chose to go and visit them a few weeks ago. The product is called Betacell, and it is made and sold by a pharmaceutical company in California that specializes in a process called micellization. This is a process where they can take drugs, vitamins, etc. and make them more readily absorbable into the cells directly, as opposed to being ingested. This mouth rinse is essentially a solution of absorbable beta-carotene and other vitamins that have been shown to have benefits in the reduction of leukoplakia in a study done by Scripps Institute. They have chosen not to make extensive claims about its effectiveness to stay away from the heavy regulations that the FDA would require to substantiate them. That is a financial consideration for a company their size. But I have included the study as an attachment to the information about the product and it is there for review. It is only one study, but it was done by a reputable institution, and had significant positive results. They are about to start marketing it through conventional drug store sales, but in the meantime it can be purchased on line from them or by phone. While I have tried the product myself and had good results from it, OCF is providing the information about it on the site as it came to us from Micelle, without representing any claims or endorsements for it. If any of the readers try the product and have good results from it we would like to hear the stories
