See this section for more about surgery: http://www.oralcancerfoundation.org/facts/neck_dissections.htm The purpose of the flap is to "bulk up" the area where the resection (removal of the tumor and clean margins) is. "Necrotic" usually means dead tissue. It sounds ominous but many here have been through it and the recovery time is around 3 weeks, about the same as if you had a face lift.
