My last post was shortly after surgery to remove 25% of my tongue and lymph nodes on the left side of my neck.

It has been four weeks since the surgery and I am doing very well. In most respects my physical and mental state is almost normal. I am eating almost anything, although some things are more difficult than others. The general pain and swelling from the surgery is minimal. My speech is much improved even though I have not started speech therepy yet. Most people say I am speaking clearly, even on the phone. However, to my ears I sound like I am talking while sucking on hard candy. I hope it gets better, but I can live with this level.

I did not get a PEG tube during surgery. It was rough for a week or so. I lost about 10 lbs overall, but am gaining back a little now. I think not having the PEG helped me recover more quickly as I was forced to try to eat.

The next steps are Chemo and Radiation. I understand that 6 weeks after surgery is a good time to start treatment. All concerned agree that Chemo/Rad might not be necessary, because the margins and the lymph nodes were clear. However, there was perineurial invasion so its seems prudent. The "cost" in terms of side effects for Chemo seem small. The radiation has more side effects, but I am young and healthy and feel the need to be aggressive, if I have hope of being cancer free in the future.

Thank you to all those who have been supportive and helpful.
