I wouldn't be too hard on your doctor yet...the bug bite might be a stretch but the position of your head and related lymph drainage could be the problem.
You didn't mention how much swelling but I have had noticeable swelling that comes and goes for no apparent reason. Radiation will make things worse. I'd watch carefully and if any pain or redness comes up then call doc again.

Mark, 21 Year survivor, SCC right tonsil, 3 nodes positive, one with extra-capsular spread. I never asked what stage (would have scared me anyway) Right side tonsillectomy, radical neck dissection right side, maximum radiation to both sides, no chemo, no PEG, age 40 when diagnosed.
